Steel is the most widely recycled material in the world, with 80 million tons recycled annually in North America alone. ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada continuously recycles steel in our furnaces to make new steel.

Our efforts do not stop there. We aim to achieve our sustainability objectives through continuous improvement of our environmental performance and dedication.

We are the largest recycler in Quebec, processing up to over one million metric tons of steel at our facilities every year. Steel cast 150 years ago is still part of our lives today.
Close to 100% of the materials that enter our scrap recycling and processing centres is recycled or reclaimed.
Four of our plants have a waste recovery rate of over 90%.

All of our Canadian facilities adhere to the ISO 14001 standard. Adhering to this voluntary environmental management standard demonstrates our commitment to minimizing the impact steelmaking has on the environment. Through this standard, our facilities are audited each year for compliance with local and national environmental policies and regulations.

While we are proud of our achievements, we realize that we can do better and that we should continue to improve our performance in all areas. For this reason, we continue to work with our various stakeholders – employees, citizens, business partners and elected representatives – to meet our commitment to protect and improve our host communities.

Investments yield environmental dividends

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada’s energy efficiency initiatives yielded considerable environmental and financial benefits in 2012.

A new reheat furnace in Longueuil delivered a 7,000 metric ton or 30 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions.
A new electric heating system aboard locomotives cut diesel consumption.
The expansion of our Contrecoeur West warehouse reduced the need forlocomotives and yielded a 300-metric ton reduction in GHG emissions.

Lavallière Bay restoration in Sorel-Tracy

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada joined other partners in a project led by Ducks Unlimited to restore and improve Lavallière Bay, on the south shore of St. Pierre Lake. The lake is home to 58 bird species, 27 fish species and 10 reptile and amphibian species—and the bay has been identified as critical, due to its geographic location and its status as a vulnerable wetland. The project will restore a permanent wetland within the bay by implementing a system of dikes and a pumping station to control water levels.
