“Local and sustainable steel”: now featured on our product labels
It is often said: ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada makes one of the most eco-friendly steels on the planet thanks to several elements of its production process.
- The use of hydro-electricity, a renewable source of energy;
- Our reduction of iron through the Midrex process, which generates half as many greenhouse gases as blast furnace production;
- Reliance on close to one million tons of scrap metal per year, which means that our steel is composed of a high percentage of recycled material…
- And much more.
How do we let our customers know? Unlike the products you buy at the store, our steel has no packaging. (And that’s actually good for the environment!) One of the only ways to confirm that the steel our clients receive comes from us is the ArcelorMittal label attached to each bundle or coil. This label contains technical information on the steel grade and other product properties, but why not also use it to highlight the ArcelorMittal brand and the environmental features of our production? This is the question our Sales and Marketing group has been working on.
“Our customers–and their own customers–are now asking for more information on where our products come from, the raw materials we use, the energy sources we draw from, and many other elements related to sustainability,” says Diane Sevigny, Director, Marketing at ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada. “Since we make an eco-friendly steel that stands out in the industry, we thought about updating our product labels to convey this message more directly.”
From now on, apart from the back side which includes more technical information, the front side of our labels is the same for all our plants. The phrase “Made in Canada from sustainable steel” emphasizes where our steel comes from and how “green” it is. A Canadian maple leaf and a circle decorated with a leaf, a visual that represents our environmental efforts in many of our other communications, are also present on the label. Finally, in addition to the ArcelorMittal logo, which clearly identifies our company, our website address and our quality and environmental certifications now appear on the label.
We are accelerating our sustainability efforts across ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada, both through measures to reduce our footprint and through ways to further communicate these measures to our stakeholders. All of this is directly related to our mission to make safe and sustainable steel.
