New Collective Agreement at the Contrecoeur scrap recycling and processing center

6 May 2016

CONTRECOEUR, May 6, 2016 – Following a general special meeting held yesterday, a majority of unionized employees of ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada’s Contrecoeur scrap recycling and processing center have voted to accept the terms of the April 21 agreement for the renewal of their bargaining contract. The agreement has a retroactive effective date of April 1, 2016 for a 6-year term. The previous agreement expired on March 31, 2016.

The company is satisfied with the ratification of the agreements, which are a positive outcome for our employees while being adapted to a volatile economy and a context of long-term low metals prices.

The agreement covers about 40 unionized employees of the recycling center (United Steelworkers-FTQ, local 6586-2). In early 2015, this site had been designated as Long Products Canada’s main platform for recycling operations; investments were made to restart its shredder and about 10 new positions were created.

In mid-February, the company ratified an agreement with three other United Steelworkers-FTQ locals in Contrecoeur-East and Longueuil, covering close to 800 employees, for a similar 6-year term. These recent agreements support industrial peace and stability of operation for employees, clients and host communities.
