Greening Project at ArcelorMittal
In fall 2026, our Longueuil site is taking another step forward in its sustainability efforts with the implementation of a major greening project in collaboration with the Société de verdissement du Montréal métropolitain (Soverdi).
The project includes the planting of more than 1,000 trees, along with 181 shrubs and 15 perennials, across various areas of the site. More specifically, the project includes 74 large-caliper trees, 327 medium-caliper trees and 632 small-caliper trees.
The project was developed with the specific realities and constraints of an industrial site in mind. The seven planting areas were designed to make the most of greening opportunities across the property while allowing site operations to continue. The plan features a diverse mix of vegetation, combining deciduous and coniferous trees of various sizes, dense plantings, shrubs and perennials, as well as areas designed as meadows. This variety will create diverse green spaces adapted to the different realities of the industrial site.
The project will continue to take root in 2027! Additional planting and seeding work will take place in the spring as part of the project’s second phase.
Beyond enhancing the site, tree planting helps reduce heat islands, capture airborne dust, create shaded areas and support biodiversity. The project also includes a landscaped green space where employees can relax, with trees that will eventually provide more shade around the picnic tables.
