Sustainable development

  • Sustainability

At ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada, producing steel with a low carbon footprint is a priority. According to a study conducted for the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie, “[…] the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated during the production of secondary steel by electric arc furnace in Quebec are 46% to 60% lower than those emitted during the same production in China, Russia or the United States […]”.

What’s more, our electric arc furnaces use clean, renewable energy from Quebec’s hydroelectric plants.

ArcelorMittal is also committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

  • Circular economy

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada recycles the majority of its residual materials back into the economy, in particular slag, which is recycled by a partner producing aggregates. Other residual materials, such as mill scale, oxide fines and lagoon sludge, are also sent to companies using these iron-rich residues.

  • Recycling

Steel is the most recycled material in the world. According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, some 60 to 80 million tonnes are recycled every year in North America alone. ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada continuously transforms old steel into new in its dedicated furnaces.

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada is the largest scrap metal recycler in Quebec, processing up to one million metric tons of steel at our facilities every year.

In partnership with Triple M, ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada has created Recyclage de métaux intégré, with seven (7) recycling centers in Abitibi, Lanaudière and Montérégie. ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada also operates a scrap metal recycling center at its Contrecoeur-Est Complex, to condition scrap for steel production.

ISO 14000 certification

All our Canadian facilities adhere to the ISO 14001 standard, and all our Quebec plants are certified. Adherence to this voluntary environmental management standard demonstrates our commitment to reducing the impact of steelmaking on the environment. Our facilities are inspected annually to ensure compliance with local and national environmental policies and regulations.
